In 2020 Florida Dept. of Education decided to move away from the common core standards. It was only February 2021, that a decision was made to adopt Florida’s B.E.S.T (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) for the 2021-2022 school year. Florida’s B.E.S.T standards have been created by Florida teachers for Florida students. This will cement high-quality academic standards, raise the bar for civic literacy, and take bold steps to ensure Florida is the most literate state in the nation.
Islamic School of Miami has decided to take the same steps and transition from Common Core to Florida’s B.E.S.T for Language Arts for the 2021-2022 school year for Grades KG – 8th Grade. Committees of subject area teachers were formed to evaluate 3-4 different text book publishers. Since publishers have not yet published the books for other subjects with Florida B.E.S.T standards, a decision was made only to purchase make a purchase order for the Language Arts textbooks this year. We will be reviewing the other subjects again next year hoping to transition over to the B.E.S.T. standards.
Based on recommendations from the Language Arts curriculum team, Mifflin Harcourt "Into Reading" series has been selected for the curriculum.
The cost of replacing the Language Arts textbooks alone will be $25,377.21.
